Follow Up To Tough Loss Against The Green Bay Packers

The Miami Dolphins prepare to take on the Chicago Bears this week after a tough loss versus the Green Bay Packers, the team showed once again the inconsistency that is frustrating for fans and supporters of the team. Once again there was a Dr. Jekyll and DR. Hyde effect in this game offensive flow was nowhere to be found in the first half, but emerged in the second half, the defense was pretty good overall applying constant pressure on Aaron Rodgers and then the coaching is what leaves you scratching your head and makes you wonder if all this is too much for coach Joe Philbin.

The offense was a tale of two halfs, a very slow, sloppy start to the game where Ryan Tannehill was erratic, inaccurate, play calling was very vanilla, there were dropped passes as we are becoming accustomed with this team and the experiment of having Mike Pouncey at guard was starting to look suspect. The second half kicks off with the Miami Dolphins offensively moving the ball up and down the field with little resistance, the running game came alive, passes were being completed and Ryan Tannehill did a better job at spreading the ball around.

The defense lived up to its billing with another strong performance against a top offense with an elite quarterback in Aaron Rodgers, Aaron Rodgers was harassed, hurried, sacked and pressured all game, the run defense against a bruising running back like Eddie Lacy was outstanding very little production came from their run game. I continue to be impressed with how Jelani Jenkins game has improved with every start an snap, Koa Misi had a nice productive return, safety Reshad Jones return from suspension was welcomed as he was around the ball making plays.

This brings me to my main concern and that is the coaching staff and more so coach Joe Philbin, when games are on the line time and time again it just seems like he buckles under the pressure and or has no confidence in what he wants to do. Prime example in the game against the Packers is with 3:01 left in the game and no timeouts left for the Packers the Miami Dolphins get the ball back and with first, second down they throw the ball removing very little time of the clock and then follow it up with a run which left one of the most dangerous players / quarterback plenty of time to put together a drive. To complete his blunders on the sidelines coach Joe Philbin used time outs while Green Bay was on offense and on a critical fourth down where Packers looked confused and were having trouble getting the play in which after the timeout played out with Aaron Rodgers hitting wide receiver Jordy Nelson for a first down and then you know how the story ends you have a fake spike that gets them close to the goal line and with six seconds left in the game Aaron Rodgers hits his tight end Quarless for the winning touchdown.

In the end the players did all they could to win this game and coach Joe Philbin found a way to give away the victory, it is tough enough to win consistently in the NFL, but when you give away a victory it becomes that much harder to succeed. Stephen Ross and Dennis Hickey will really have to evaluate coach Joe Philbin at the end of the year, but in my opinion it might be time to move on from the experiment the results are just not there. This team has a roster with talent, but it is not maximized or used to the best of their abilities and in my opinion will continue to be that way if coach Joe Philbin sticks around I believe he is a good coordinator, but in no way is he ready to be a head coach and deal with all the decisions that need to be made when the bullets are flying, no disrespect to the coach some coaches are meant to be head coaches and some coordinators. Stay tuned for the Miami Dolphins as they take on the roller coaster Chicago Bears October 19, 2014 at 1pm.
