Review of Sloppy Win Over the Jacksonville Jaguars

The saying goes a win is a win, but when your offense continues to start of slow that is a bit concerning considering that we are midway through the season. The defense shines again with constant pressure, turnovers and the ability to keep this team competitive in games while the offense struggles. Coach Philbin in my opinion really needs to get a grip on the offensive woes; especially with the background of being an offensive coordinator, one thing is to have a few bad series, but to not even score three points in the first quarter against the Jaguars is alarming. Many players have expressed their concern with the continuous slow starts like Mike Wallace who has been the most vocal and understandably so, considering how much he has been paid to take the top off defenses and it is not happening at the rate it should considering the talent that is Mike Wallace.

I must admit that going into this game I felt this could easily be a trap game; especially with the Jaguars coming off their first victory carrying a pretty hard nose defense that can get after you. The Jaguars defense started the game on fire really applying pressure to Ryan Tannehill and penetrating through the offensive line causing havoc in the backfield, but the Miami Dolphins offensive line did regroup, they helped protect Ryan Tannehill better and did a better job in the run as the game wore on. The part that really gets me about the offense is how there is no identity yet, we have no calling card of who we are it seems as if we wait until the last possible second to try something different to turn the game around, which in turn could be dangerous moving forward with these next four games against the Chargers, Lions, Bills and Broncos. I do not want to sound like we lost, but we did struggle an beat a team that was going into our game at (1-6), so I understand when I hear players like Mike Wallace gripe an express concern. Mike Wallace finished the game with just two catches for fifty nine yards zero touchdowns, the lone touchdown went to wide receiver Rishard Matthews for three yards on that catch. The running game was on and off, but was better in the second half which helped Lamar Miller finish with fourteen carries for 78 yards, Ryan Tannehill five carries for 48 yards and Daniel Thomas four carries for 18 yards, in total the offense produced 13 points, which when they take on the Charges this sunday November 2nd that will not be enough to come out victorious.

The Defense once again is the backbone of this organization I can only tip my cap to them, because despite the offense not producing or pulling their own weight they continue to fight, work and refuse to give up. The defense this past sunday put the team on their back assisting to provide fourteen points off two timely interception returns by safety Louis Delmas and Pro Bowl Cornerback Brent Grimes. The Defensive front once again was all over the opposing quarterback applying pressure, the defense came away with four sacks, one by Reshad Jones, Cameron Wake, rookie Terrence Fede and Jonathan Freeny. At the end of every game I come away with if the offense gets it together the Miami Dolphins legitimately have a playoff type defense that can apply pressure, has done a pretty good job against the run, causes turnovers and for the most part they bend at times but do not break, really not much else to say or comment by far the best unit on the team.

The Dolphins now will take on a team in the San Diego Chargers that can score, can really apply pressure for you to keep up with them and are led by a fiery quarterback in Philip Rivers. This sunday will be a true test to see where this team is at, the positive is that the game will be played here in Miami at Sun Life Stadium at 1:00pm. In my humble opinion I think between coach Joe Philbin and offensive coordinator Bill Lazor have to agree to call more plays down the field take advantage of the weapon that is Mike Wallace we have seen that many cornerbacks can not keep up with him and more often than not he is open for the big play. The only way Ryan Tannehill will get better and more comfortable with the long ball is by repetition in real time when the bullets are flying not in practice where the environment is controlled. I go back again to confidence, because he has the physical tools, the arm strength, the mobility, but when it comes to the long ball it's like he's afraid to make a mistake or at times seems like he wants to drop the perfect pass, but when you have a guy with speed and the hunger to go make big plays you just have to let it fly, see Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, big Ben Roethlisberger, what all those guys have in common is they don't hold back on the deep ball they see it and let it fly to allow their speedsters to go make a play.

In the end there is no secret formula the Miami Dolphins have the talent on both sides of the ball, we go back to the word consistency and that is what the mantra should be for this offensive group stay consistent and within your personnel and the results will take care of themselves. I believe this team can make a run if the offense catches up with the defense, but it does start with the coaching and the ability to adjust, to create, inspire and provide the best opportunities for the players to succeed and flourish. Tune in Sunday to watch the Miami Dolphins take on the San Diego Chargers at 1:00pm and see if they can make it three in a row while also keeping pace with the New England Patriots
(6-2) and Buffalo Bills (5-3).
